Well in university you have a choice between Excel and C programming, if you ask me try to learn C as its more easy in exams since there won't be a computer in it....
Second; Excel requires you to remember more then learn if u know what i mean you will be required to remember what items are there in an menu like FIle, Edit, Format, Insert, etc. which is pain i tell you since if u forget any one that can screw you up for sure....
"My college hasn't given any option between C and Excel. So as far practicals are concerned"
Well there are no practicals for excel till i know since its not practical actually excel is more of a memory test type of thing....
"do I have an option between the 2 in the theory paper of 80 marks or will I have to stick with only C in my theory paper because my college hasn't given any option?"
Yes you have options in theory and unless your college is from hell they will give you an option after they have given you an idea of what the two things are since the Prof. will want you to make the decision....
ask your prof. if you could skip the lectures of any one since its an option in the main paper...... mostly he will allow you since you don't need to learn more...
"I'm thinking of preparing for both for the theory paper and attempting the easier one or both if time permits etc."
Dude unless you have 4 - 6 hrs you won't be able to attempt both, and preparing for both is mostly waste of time if u ask me since both of them are a bit vast and can't and should not be done together you should actually concentrate on any one either go for Memory Test (Excel) or Intelligent Test (C Programming)
"But can my college restrict me to C like they have done in the practicals? I'll be appearing in March 2008"
No they can't actually they will never ask you what you are gona attempt in the exam unless they are bifurcation there classes according since even in boards application for exam you write as "Computer Systems & Applications" as the subject not C Programming or Excel type thing... its the time at which you are giving the exam (while answering the paper in boards Mar 2008) will you decide whether you are going to answer Excel or C Programming

Advantages and Disadvantages for Excel & C Programming
MS Excel
Advantages
1) Its a test of memory, if ur memory is good got for it.
2) Its easier to understand since even if u don't know why what happens and why just mugupand its done
3) No calculations is required or maths (but then whats the fun)
Disadvantages
1) No practicals given by institution so if you have a PC its an very good advantage since else you won't know the difference between menu bar and tool bar and status bar and scroll, etc, etc....
2) Too many menus and functions and items to remember (if you ask me)
3) Your answer will be like do this click that a dialog (popup window) will open then click this and stuff (since the answer are descriptive and long) so if ur not good at describing don't do it
4) There are multiple ways of doing the same thing so need to know them all atleast to a limit (copying text can be select it via mouse and press Crtl + C or select via keyboard with arrows while shift is pressed and then click copy from the Edit menu) type of thing
5) The version differences some time matters like some functions isn't there in the new ms excel that you might have installed on ur pc or it might not be at the same location since the board does not specify a version as per to say its around MS Excel 97 - 2000 but not any latest... (So practicals is a problem)
C Programming
Advantages
1) Very short answer (trust me some time its only a single digit for a 6 marks answer)
2) don't have to remembers in a sense (if your memory is not good but ur a good learner then this is a better option)
3) You can try it out on the pc in practicals and see what happens and why
4) Tho there are like 100000 ways to do a calculations all of them are right 200% till the answer is correct and all of them have a similar flow of logic
Disadvantages
1) You need to learn very very basic maths (like +, -, *[Multiply], /[Divide], BODMAS rule, etc) but then if u don't know that how the hell did u get till graduation
2) you need to understand it can't mugup trust me trying to mugup C will get you killed in the exams...
3) you need to understand 3 - 4 type of programming statements (trust me tho they are 3 - 4 sentences its enough for a years plus worth of studying) and different type of data types (integers, long, float, etc) and there behavior which i have seen many people having problem with since the Prof. them self can't explain it some time...
Well thats that hope i have helped you and answered you questions, if you have any more questions please do ask i will reply as soon as possible.
i can help you even in learning C Programming and Excel if you like but i can't take classes since i am on a tight schedulei am a programmer my self....
my concepts are extremely clear, just if you want to see your's friends or Prof.'s knowledge ask them this question...
Q) How do you check if a given string variable has any letters or not? (letters as in 'a' to 'z' caps or no caps) [just ask them how many lines of code will it take approximately)
just reply back with there answer of what they said if not the program and i will tell you that 9 out of 10 give you more then 5 lines of code to do it...
it can be done in 1 line of codethats the skills any one knowing that will have a good concepts of programming since it takes brains to get that answer
(this question was in some Oct papers in the past and the board declared it out of syllabus and gave marks to all, which i beg to differ since my answer was in syllabus and perfectmy Prof. did not even know the answer and after looking at my answer for 5 mins had to agree its in syllabus and correct
)
any case tell me how it goes, if any thing just let me know ok i will reply
take care bye
Thanks a lot for your reply. I've right now decided for C. My classes professor is very good. He is Verus D'za in Ideal Classes who also is an author of a book. He is great in fact!
Thats good to know, if you require any help or answer to any questions just let me know i will try to assist as much as possible....
bye take care
